Met Gala 2022

Well well well, it looks like it is that time of the year again; the first Monday in May, the super bowl of the fashion world, fashion’s biggest night, The Met Gala! *cheers and applause* This year is also great because we haven’t had to wait a full year to get this one! Back in September of 2021, we got a Met Gala since there had been a two-year gap due to Covid. You can take a peek at the September looks here. This post also goes over what the Met Gala is, who gets invited/buys a ticket, and what purpose it serves. The same regulations for proof of Covid vaccine and no recent illness or exposure also apply to this year’s event.

This year’s theme is In America: An Anthology of Fashion which will serve as part two of the 2021 theme which was In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. I have also seen this year’s theme referenced as guided glamour, but Vouge says Anthology of Fashion, and who am I to argue with Vogue? From what I can tell, this theme is meant to ask the question of who is American and meant to show more inclusivity in fashion. The guided glamour aspect is more of what the guests should wear. So we are looking for big glamour, old Hollywood glamour, and opulence and decadence! As per usual, I do a round-up of my favorite looks and do not do a best/worst dressed situation. As I’ve mentioned many times before, this just functions as a way to pit women against each other and we do not support that over here! So here we go my favorite looks of The Met Gala 2022.

Edit: While I was in the process of working on this post and watching all of the photos come out, the Supreme Court made up its mind to overturn Roe V Wade when it comes time for the court case. I am currently working on this story and giving it time for more information to come out. I will have a post up later this week with all of this information and my thoughts. Until then, let’s enjoy some gorgeous fashion.

All photos were found on Vogue, except for the first 2 which I linked two in the New York Times.

Kim Kardashian in Vintage. Usually, when Kim comes to the Met Gala, I am disappointed and she doesn’t go on theme. I am usually completely irritated with her and often wonder why she was invited in the first place. But this time around, wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress she wore to sing happy birthday to JFK, Kim K has killed it. She isn’t really on theme at all, but she does look glamorous and it is an incredibly iconic moment. She looks beautiful and other photos from the night show her looking truly happy, which we haven’t seen in a while. I loved this look on her and hope that she is entering a new era where she is much happier and freer.

Billie Eilish in Gucci. This beautiful woman stunned in September 2021, and she is stunning yet again! In my opinion, Billie was the most on-theme out of all of the attendees. Not only is so on theme for the time period, but her own personal take by adding in some elements of whimsigothic and her edgy dark hair really make the look. I love that she went with all pastels and the corset top?! I died a little from sheer amazement when I saw this. Billie has typically had a personal style that isn’t for me, but lately, she has been experimenting with some out-of-the-box styles for her, and all of this will cement her as the fashion icon she already is.

Lily James in Versace. Miss Lily James is always a favorite of mine when it comes to any red carpet. And honestly just in general. Her gown missed the period piece element of the theme, but the entire dress is made from these periwinkle pearls that scream opulence and glamour. I love that strings of pearls come down onto her arms, and the gorgeous, sparkly earrings really add another touch of glam. She never disappoints and this look is more proof of that. She has also been doing this “girly gown and light colors” with dark makeup thing and I am so here for it. I love the mixing of the two aesthetics.

Gabrielle Union in Versace. I have some mixed feelings about this look, mainly stemming from the massive flower and very lackluster beauty, but the glitter of the dress and the flowing feathers of the cape made her on theme and won me over. It has opulence and decadence, but also some more toned back elements that made this look one to beat. It would be a 10/10 for me if only the flower were gone and she had done a bigger beauty moment. She usually never disappoints when it comes to e red carpet, and I would say that streak lives on.

Lizzo in Thom Browne. Not only did Lizzo play the flute on the carpet, but she stuck on theme and looked AMAZING. As per usual, Lizzo killed and looked like the absolute badass babe that she is. Her dress was structured like a corset with garters being shown with a sheer panel on the bottom. She had a gorgeous cape to top it off with the gold brocade embroidery. She was as glam as ever and her crazy nails topped off the look!

Jasmine Tookes in Zuhair Murad Couture. Again we have a look that doesn’t really fit in with the period portion of the theme but does work with the decadence and glam portion. Jasmine always looks amazing and has her own personal style down to a T, which I think is shown pretty clearly here. The glitzy emerald dress combined with the actual emerald necklace is truly amazing, along with the cut and style of the gown. The leg slit moment is also incredible and she did it so well. The lace gloves with the rings layered over the top of them are one of my absolute favorite trends and they really add to her overall look. The feathers in her hair are so perfectly placed and really add to her overall look in terms of the theme. This whole look really gives off cabaret vibes and I love it.

Karli Kloss in Givenchy. Is this on theme? No. Is it very glam and opulent and gorgeous and glitzy so I included it anyway? You betcha. Her Met Gala looks almost never are on theme and have often fallen pretty flat. Anyone remember how much she hyped up her camp look and how terrible and boring it was? That tends to be her thing when it comes to the Met. So when she walked out in this little number with her dark hair and dark, vampy makeup I was sold. I love when people step out of their comfort zones style-wise and what better place to do that than The Met Gala? The overall theme is missing once again, but she has the glam down and the gloves with the rings really give things a wonderful touch. The overall lace and cut-out moment is also just too good not to be included. Not only does she look the picture of glam, she added a dark element that worked so well and is so unexpected of her.

Rosalina in Givenchy. I am sure many would argue with me on this one, but I feel like Rosalina got pretty damn close to being on theme in all the ways. While she isn’t as on theme as Billie, the construction of her dress pays homage to this time period with the corset top and the beautiful buttons going down the back into this gorgeous feathered train. The jewels and glitter add to the beauty of this look and I honestly coudln’t love it more. The sunglasses are also a nice touch of modernity for the elite. Truly no notes or complaints here. Miss Rosalina killed it.

Kendall Jenner in Prada. I have some mixed feelings about this look. While I do love it overall, it is not even close to being on theme. As all the Kar-Jenners do at one point or another, she bleached out her eyebrows and went with a boob out top. I have loved other looks of her way more than this, like her camp look, but I didn’t hate this gown, and here’s why: so many attendees played it way too safe and went way too small for something that is supposed to be big and huge and over the top. It is a costume ball, and way too many people this year did not go even a little bit. Her overall look is very glam and the massive skirt to this gown with the long train really is the picture of glam. I think if she had added some more jewels and done a little something different with her hair, this could have been a crazy killer look. But overall, not too bad!

Cardi B in Versace. Cardi B came to play and put so many other looks to shame. She has never once played it safe or gone mellow for a Met Gala look and we love her for that! She is decked quite literally from head to toe in gold chains and coins and is the picture of wealth and opulence. She understood the theme to a T and even though the overall look doesn’t really fit in with the period of gilded glamour, the coins are very reminiscent of that time and she really went all out for the glam. So no notes, Cardi B came to slay and she outshined so many.

Cara Delevingne in Dior Haute Couture. Again, this is another that I feel like people would argue was not on theme, but I really felt like it was. She made it her own, and went for a more masculine/neutral approach which I think is what would throw most people off. Her coat, pants and cane make it all ver of the gilded age and being painted all gold is really very glamorous. Combined with her very big makeup and then very big necklace, Cara came looking stunning and on theme as she always does.

Jodi Turner-Smith in Gucci. I love love love this look. This one made my top 5 for sure and I hope you all can see why. She took a slightly flapper girl approach to the gilded era and it paid off big time! She looks so incredibly stunning with her beading and jewels, as well as her soft glam. This color too is so good on her and not one we saw much of this Met. For whatever reason, attendees were really opting for black and white this year when the gilded glam aspect really allowed for all sorts of color and metallics, which many of my favorite looks embraced. She really took glam to the next level and I loved the whole thing.

Taylor Hill. I have looked high and low to try and find out who this dress is by and have not been able to locate it, so if you know please comment down below! Taylor has sometimes played it safe when it comes to red carpet looks and I would have to say this is not one of those times. She went big with the full length gown and massive train, and embroidery detailing really adds an extra piece I love. She also stayed pretty on theme, even adding in the boots that are perfectly on theme. The ruffles and the floral embellishments also ad to this wondrous look, and I hope that from here on out we see more looks like this from her!

Dakota Johnson in Gucci. It is no secret that I absolutely love Dakota Johnson, and that can make me a bit biased towards her red carpet looks. Even though this isn’t super on theme, it does give off flapper girl vibes, with all of the glitter and glam she really stands out. The jumpsuit style is also perfect and unexpected, which we love to see. The lace touch and the extra glam earrings really make the look for me. She is also wearing her hair darker these days and her dark makeup really makes the whole look glamorous and beautiful. Even if she isn’t fully on theme.

Jessica Chastain in Gucci. This woman is an icon in her own right. Fashion and acting are included in her icon status. But this may be my favorite look I have ever seen from her. She is on theme with the opulence and glam, but she also hits the period element by looking like a fortune teller from the gilded age. I absolutely love the crystal snake coming around her waist and up over her neckline. Her hat is also so amazing and looks so perfect for this era. The draping of the dress is also so perfect for this era and is truly in my top 5 looks of the night.

Madelaine Petsch in Moschino. At this point, you all know what I’m going to say right? Not really on theme, but still pretty anyways. As much as I love the Met Gala theme, it would probably be easier to just give a color scheme attendees have to follow since very few people follow the theme every year anyway. The embroidery style and gloves all give this a light gilded age feel and do really give a feel of wealth and glam. I love her jewelry choice and her hairstyle also lends to this vibe she is giving off. I really do love this look and really dig the two-piece style she went with. The two-piece style has been making a bit of a comeback in the world of red carpet dress and I am here for it! There were a few other two-piece gowns, but this was by far my favorite.

Megan Thee Stallion in Moschino. I don’t feel like I even need to give this any explanation but I am going to anyway because of course I am. Not only is she on theme, but she is on theme in such a non-traditional way I can’t even. She looks like a metallic angel ready for battle and I mean that as the highest compliment. She has managed to look powerful, sexy, and strong all in one look. Megan does this often and perfectly, so really it’s on me to think she wouldn’t bring this level of power to the Met Gala. If Megan wasn’t primarily a musician, she would put working models to shame, that is for sure.

Maude Apatow in Miu Miu. While this is a pretty simple look, and I condemned simple looks earlier, I think this one works perfectly. We have some gilded age style coming in with the style of the dress, the hair, and the beading. She has some classic Hollywood glam coming in with the makeup and the neckalce. Overall, I really love this look and I particularly love it on her. She is such a classic beauty that this look was made for her and looked like it was what she was born to wear. I hope in the future we see her step out of her comfort zone a little, but I did love this moment.

Blake Lively in Versace. The Queen has arrived! So many people have already talked about and directed this look, so I am going to keep this brief; in all of her years of attending the Met Gala she has not once failed to meet the theme, look stunning, and upstage most of the people in attendance. This year was no difference. She was inspired by the art deco style of Manhattan and her crown and the teal portion of her dress were inspired Lady Liberty herself. She looks magical and ethereal, and this is probably my favorite look of the night.

Kaia Gerber in Alexander McQueen. Last but not least we have the lovely Kaia in close enough to the theme. While I do love her gown and think it screams glam and gives us tastes of the gilded age, her hair is what really tips it for me. Her big, beautiful curls really makes this whole outfit for me and I wish I could make my hair like this all the time. She looks very angelic and delicate which I love.

Well that is it for this years round up! Thank you so much for joining me, and please let me know down below what your favorite looks were! Also please follow me on all of my socials so you can stay updated for when I post about all of the Roe v Wade things happening right now!
