Costumes of Bridgerton
Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to hear tales of the cities finest as they navigate this courting season so that all the eligible young ladies and gentlemen can find suitable matches to live out their days with…
Ok just kidding but today I am here to show you some of the best costumes from the Netflix original series, Bridgerton. If you don’t know what Bridgerton is, stop reading this post, go binge-watch it, and then come back so you can appreciate it more fully. I am going to break this down by my favorite costumes (only the female ones because they have better ones) and then just discuss a bit? Sound like a plan? I will also not be diving into the costume controversy about the way that they do not stick to the time period because that is not the purpose of this show! Plus, if they were going to stick to historical accuracy then there woudln’t have been anyone on the cast who wasn’t white. So let’s celebrate diversity and gorgeous costumes, even if they are not historically accurate.
Since Daphne is in the process of going through her season (coming out season, time to find a husband) and has many events and balls to attend, she has some of the best costumes of the show. She is the eldest daughter of one of the most prestigious families in London and therefore has the money to be able to spend on more luxurious gowns. The one above is something she wore for a picnic-type event during the day. Most of the gowns and dresses that are worn in the show are empire-waisted like this one above and involve gloves. There are many moments when the women are taking off their gloves and the men help them or a man they are courting helps retie the ribbon of the glove. Each piece of these costumes and clothing items has an express purpose in being worn. I love this one in particular because of the mesh sleeves that are included. The daisy detail carries over into them and ends with some beautiful lace detailing before carrying into the gloves.
This next one is a gown she wears to one of the balls and might be my favorite dress of the show. The beadwork alone is exquisite, paired with the perfect jewelry and the color of the dress. Besides her wedding dress, this is her most regal look which she pulls off without a hitch. The top of the bodice with the cap sleeve and the carryover of the beading onto the sleeves is so perfect. Plus the drip effect that carries down the skirt is just amazing.
Apologies for the photo, but this dress was incredibly hard to find photos of! This gives a good idea of what the wedding dress looks like however. The beading detail on the top, the embroidery on the sleeves that caries down to her wrap, and the beautiful embroidery that is not eh skirt of her dress, all make up an incredibly lovely wedding gown. The same empire waist is employed here ( and is that way for everyone but the queen) and is perfectly completed with the jewels on her crown and the simple necklace. Daphne has the art of subtle yet gorgeous down to a science.
Out of all of Eloise’s dresses, this one is my favorite. She wears quite a few more elaborate dresses, but I love the color and the feel of this one out of all of her gowns. She is the daughter who doesn’t want to come out and start her own wedding season to meet a husband and would rather go to college and become a writer. For her character, this dress most exemplifies who she is as a person. She has a few other day dresses that do the same thing, but this is my personal favorite. With her darker coloring, the sage green and pale pink of the bow compliment her perfectly. Plus I just enjoy her bow and lace thing that is being worn almost like a necklace. It is just gorgeous.
Queen Charlotte (the woman in the middle wearing the teal) has one of the most gorgeous wardrobes in the show. It s hard to just pick a few of her gowns to feature but this is one of my favorites. I love the contrast of the deep teal and the wine color in the middle. The golden brocade design that coordinates with the gold on her sleeves and the jewelry is just so gorgeous. Since she is the queen, she is not confined to the empire waist style and wears a more traditional style gown for her wardrobe.
This was my other favorite dress of the queens! Again, the contrasting colors were so perfect to me with the magenta and the mustard, as well as all of the embroidery detailing down the middle and onto her sleeves. I truly cannot get enough of the detailing in her wardrobe.
Marina Thompson’s wardrobe is the most simple, but that somehow attracted me more to her and her clothing. Since she is staying with the Featherington family, she does end up having to wear their colors of really obnoxious yellows and oranges and pinks, but this dress is so soft and delicate, it quickly became one of my favorites. The flowers and leaves in her hair add the perfect touch to this slightly whimsical look. I love the netted gloves, it just adds a slightly different vibe to the whole outfit.
There are so many more amazing costumes from this show, but if I picked them all, this post would be a mile long. Hopefully, you guys enjoyed a few of my favorites, and if you haven't seen the show yet, go watch it now!
