What to Wear When You Have Chronic Pain

Hello, lovely people of the internet! Thanks for coming back, again and again, to read my rambling thoughts and see my goofy photos! It truly means the world to me that you all keep supporting me week after week. But enough with the mushy feelings, on to today’s post!

As someone who struggles with chronic pain and chronic illness, fashion and beauty has always been a very big part of how I handle the way I feel. It doesn’t help the chronic pain; it doesn’t make it got away. But looking good in clothes that don’t cause extra pain is so important to me, and I’m sure it’s important to others who also struggle with chronic pain and chronic illness. It is so important for my mental health and my ability to move through society on bad pain days. But, there are certain clothing items that make my pain worse on days when it is already really bad. If I can, on bad pain days I stay in bed with just a bog t-shirt and underwear on or lose sweat-shorts. But that is not always possible, and most times on bad pain days I have to go to work or run errands, or whatever else in my daily life. The photos below are outfits that I wear on my worst days when I have to get up and go do things. Keep scrolling to see my favorite bad pain days outfits!

First things first: if I have to be productive either at home or out of the house, I will always do my brows and put mascara on. It can be done sitting down if the pain is really bad, and doesn’t require any extraneous effort. But it does make me feel a lot more done and ready to work on things.

This is the first outfit and one of the best things to wear when dealing with pain. This romper is also great for endo belly, a symptom of endometriosis that makes the stomach swell and get kind of hard and can make you appear pregnant, and the ruching at the top creates an empire waist effect that hides the endo belly. Or just bad bloating if that is a problem you are facing. It is lightweight and hangs very loose on the body which allows there to not be any pressure points on your body from clothing. Plus if you were to fall asleep or crawl into bed in it, it would be comfortable and not wrinkle or get weird. A romper like this is needed in your chronic pain fashion arsenal.

The other staple needed for chronic pain is a long maxi dress. Not form-fitting at all (Kevin calls this my mumu) and just hangs on your body like pajamas. But, I have worn this dress in the summer, in the winter with some tights, boots, sandals, and sneakers and it is seriously the perfect staple for chronic pain. It hides bloating or swelling, and lets you move comfortably and confidently through your day. A maxi skirt is also a good one to have, but that can get tricky with tops sometimes, and depending on where your pain is, a tight-fitting top can do more harm. So a maxi dress is the best way to combat all issues you may have in any area of your body. Slap on some comfy sneakers and you are ready to rock and roll. At the end of the day, light, loose, and flowy things are going to be your best bet on bad pain days. Allow yourself to feel cute, but also comfortable. Both are possible I promise!

This wasn’t the longest or most informative post this week, but my chronic pain issues have been acting up so much the last few weeks that this was all I could muster for my third post this week. A friendly reminder to take care of yourself and let yourself rest when you need to. You are doing the best you can and that is all anyone can ask of you. You’re doing great even if it doesn’t always feel like it!
