Things I Used to Hate but Now Like

Welcome back lovelies! Today I am bringing you something a little lighter since Saturday’s post was on the heavier side. I try to keep things evenly balanced between fashion/style and the reality of the current world situation, and being in quarantine has definitely made it trickier for there to be a balance! Once I am out of here I have so many fun shoots and other things planned for everyone so stay tuned! 7 days left before I get to go back to the world, everyone! Cross your fingers I don’t lose my mind before then.

Anyways! Today I wanted to bring you a fun post about ten trends that I truly used to abhor and ridicule, and how and why I have changed my mind on them!

1. Filas

This is the first one on the list because it is the one I made fun of the most. Now, Fila is a full brand with many different styles of shoes and they have several more sleek pairs than this one, but this is the one that rose to fame as a classic chunky sneaker that so many people bought. I am honestly still not a huge fan of this style, but we sell these at the store I currently work at so I tried a pair on, and OH MY GOD are they comfortable! I have never worn a shoe as comfy as this one. They are really not my style at all (other people pull them off well) but I almost thought about buying a pair because they were amazing. As I said, they have a bunch of different styles that I am sure are equally as comfortable if this style isn’t for you. But wow, I get why people were buying these so much!

2. Biker Shorts

I was never opposed to the biker short thing in regard to actual workout clothes; that made sense to me! But for some reason seeing it out and about as one of the main trends that popped up this summer, I was not here for it. Once again though, as soon as I tried on a pair and realized how comfy they were, I scale back my judgment. I still don’t think I would wear these to class, or like on a full day of activities like some people do, but this would be the perfect outfit to run errands in. I could also see this is a good option for lunch/brunch after a hike, anything casual and laid back! I do love the way these shorts look with an oversized tee or hoodie, just looks so cozy.

3. Headbands

This one felt very childish and preppy when it first started to make some appearances. All new trends definitely need time to work out their kinks and get better as they go, and this one was no exception. The first few versions of this were either far too young for a lot of the people who were wearing it or were giving off major Blair Waldorf vibes. As this trend has continued, I can honestly say I am pleasantly surprised! I follow a lot of bloggers who are not either of the styles I mentioned above, and manage to rock it! The whole idea of “cottage core” has also brought around some amazing headbands that look amazing on the people wearing them. I don’t think they are really for me ( I have embraced the massive hair clips though), but I think they look amazing on the people I mainly see wearing them!

4. Matching Sets

This is another one that started out very childish. I noticed it a few summers back when I was working for American Eagle, and they were coming out with summer sets that were all in fruit prints with a lot of ruffles. It was something I would have seen myself buying for my little cousin who was about four at the time, not selling to a college-aged woman. I have never minded sets when it came to workout clothes, pajamas, or even loungewear sets, but for some reason, the more structured outfit set really threw me off. But yet again, a little time and so new ideas really did wonders for the matching set! The one above is just one example of all the ways sets have become so cute. This one would be perfect for going out if bars were still a thing; I have seen some great, very chic sets, as well as very gorgeous business-style sets making a comeback! I think one of these in my future for Summer 2021.

5. Mom Jeans/Boyfriend Jeans

This one is a little weird because I never truly hated this style, or was super against it, but I assumed these kinds of jeans wouldn’t ever look good on me, plus I had spent most of high school wearing jeans that didn’t fit me, and looked baggy and awful. So, I couldn’t understand why someone would purposefully do that to themselves. Once you realize how they are supposed to fit, though, and how comfy they are, it is very easy to add a pair or two to your closet! They hug you in all the right spots and work with whatever outfit you want them to be! I love the pair I have and am looking to get another pair to add to my collection!

6. Mixed Prints

Ok so this is on Olivia Palermo so she can do no wrong, but in general, there are very few people who can pull off so many different prints. Usually, two different prints are the best and work well, as long as it’s not two different kinds of the same print. But with these, three different prints can often look so busy and not cute at all, but the way this and others are done works so well because they are the same color scheme. While I haven't fully figure out how to do this for myself with my own style, but it looks amazing! It just looks great on everyone whos daring enough to try it.

7. T-shirts Layered Under Dresses

This might seem like a stupid one to dislike, but I think it has to do with the fact that every single woman between the ages of 13-30 was wearing this all at once. It was just on everyone everywhere and when it comes to my style, I like to do things that not everyone else does. I like to be more daring things with my outfits, but this is actually the way to solve my problem of not being able to wear some of my favorite summer dresses during the winter and fall! Since I live in a pretty chilly climate, I would need to use a long sleeve, but it would be the best way to get to wear some of my more structured sundresses into the winter!

8. Layered Necklaces

This is another one that took a little while to get going for me. When it first came onto the fashion scene, they were only chunky, massive necklaces layered together. Now, that looked ok some people but for a lot of people, it was far too much. I would have looked ridiculous in the first wave of this trend, but I love the way it has developed! I love the way that layering these delicate pieces can give any outfit a little extra elevation and style, even something as simple as a t-shirt and jeans. Nothing wrong with adding glam to your everyday outfit!

9. Blazers as Casual Wear

Blazers have typically been reserved for all things business and professional, but over the past few years, they have been making a much more chic statement. I have seen them so many ways lately, it truly changed my mind on how to wear them! I was iffy at first because they just still felt far too stuffy to be something you could wear casually. But as you can see if the photo above, they can be made so fashionable and so cute! They work like this over a t-shirt, over a hoodie, or even tossed over a slip dress for a slightly sexy vibe. It’s a piece I am definitely looking to add to my closet.

10. Athletic Sneakers with Dresses

I have been wearing sneakers and docs with dresses for several years and truly love the way it looks. I am all here for the mixing of the feminine with the masculine and playing with how an outfit feels, but for some reason when it came to athletic sneakers (big, chunky ones) with slip dresses. sundresses, or even the more high fashion dress, I was completely confused and couldn’t wrap my head around why this was a thing. And to be totally honest, I still don’t love every interaction of this outfit, but I am getting more and more on board with it! Why not be comfortable and cute at the same time?

That’s it for today friends! I’ll see you all on Thursday for another slightly mellow post!
