Euphoria Makeup
If you pay attention to the beauty or fashion communities of the world at all, you have seen HBO’s Euphoria, splashed all over it. The makeup on this show was incredible and groundbreaking for so many reasons! It was truly beautiful and pushed so many boundaries on what we normally see with television makeup, especially when it comes to high school girls. Even the girls who were supposed to be the more “normal/basic” of the women featured, still had fun with their makeup choices and went a little wild with them. I shared some photos below of my personal favorites from the show. I don’t know about you, but Euphoria has me wanting to be even more adventurous with makeup than I already am. Maybe it will even inspire you to try some crazy looks yourself.
Just in case you feel the need to create, grab some glitter and neon/bright eyeshadow. There is nothing even remotely subtle about these looks. Have those things ready to go? Perfect, let’s dive in!
Rue- She has the most mellow of all the looks in this show. She only has two major makeup moments and then the rest of the time she is pretty mellow with makeup. Her style is very grungey and a little masculine so makeup is not crucial to her look.
These glitter tears, for lack of a better description, are worn a couple of times by Rue in the show. She does them for the fair and a party at the very beginning of the show. They are a subtle but fun look you could incorporate to any outing for a little more of a whimsical spin.
This is the last big look we see from Zendaya’s character, Rue. The lighting bolt-like embellishment on the corners of her eyes is worn for her prom look. Super simple and paired with a suit, its a tinge of fun on an otherwise classic look.
Jules- This character is played by Hunter Schafer, a gorgeous human who I am now obsessed with. She has the most dramatic looks out of the whole show. Jules is the new kid in town who is clad in Manga inspired clothes with bright colored patent leather skirts and neon platform boots. Her makeup is something to aspire to.
Since Jules has outlandish makeup every time we see her in the show, it will be hard to cover every look she debuts. But! There are a few that demand attention. The collage above shows some of her more mellow looks that she does on a daily basis. Like basic school makeup, as one does.
This pink and gold look was worn for her costume in the Halloween episode to accompany her angel costume. It is one of the more dramatic looks she does considering she did a full glitter eyebrow to go with it. But it is also one of my favorites since it is so elegant.
Even though Jules wears a lot of dramatic looks, this has to be the most extreme one. This is something that was stuck on to her eyes and not an eyeshadow look, but it still provides the shock and awe factor of the rest of her looks. This is something most people may wear to a music festival or a concert, but Jules wore to a party.
This is from the last episode of the season and the last look we get from Jules for the time being. While her jacket was clad with the transgender symbol, her makeup also seemed to be making a statement of its own. Some things I read seemed to think the colors were meant to go with the transgender symbol, while others thought the black streaks in her hair and slightly heavier makeup indicated a deeper character shift. Whatever the true meaning behind this last makeup look is, it is easy to agree that it is gorgeous and striking.
Cassie- This is another character that we see in Euphoria who doesn’t wear a lot of makeup daily. She goes for a cat-eye, some simple glitter, or even an all-natural look. She has a very specific reputation at the school that she does her best to counteract by looking more demure than she truly is or wants to be. Sydney Sweeney plays Cassie, who is a beautiful, blonde, angelic girl that is not afraid of who she is what she wants.
This is one of her boldest looks. This specific look is used in a memory sequence she has during a crucial moment in the show (no spoilers). She is ice skating and wearing a brilliant blue costume to go with her eye look and the gems that crest her face and hair. This is one of my favorite looks, especially since she keeps the winged look with the jewels that she usually does with regular black eyeliner.
This is her Halloween look and it is amazing on her. Most people think that you either get to have a bold eye or a bold lip, not both. But here, Cassie incorporates both with a great bob wig that ties the whole thing together. Simple, but gorgeous.
This is Cassie’s last look of note. She wears this simple, sequin look to the fair that, once again, is full of important plot points I will not divulge here. Most characters do something fun for the fair with their makeup but keep it slightly subtle so they don’t upstage the major events.
Maddy- Maddy is maybe my favorite character on the show. Not because we share a name, and not because she is sarcastic, but because she gets stuck in situations that are beyond her years and handles them (mostly) well. All the female characters in this show are extremely complex, but Maddy is involved in one of the most complicated pieces of the show and I commend her for how she handles it.
Maddy is a very outspoken and fearless character. She is super bold and does not shy away from who she is and hat she thinks. Her clothes and makeup reflect that. Aside from Jules, she is the character with the next most insane makeup. This first look is from the second episode when we see her through Nate’s eyes for the first time. She is apparently at cheer practice and still in a full eye look complete with gems. The blue even matches the blue in her matching set she is wearing.
These are two more casual looks Alexa Demie embodies as her character Maddy. These aren’t even looks that accompany a formal, Halloween or party. They are just her everyday looks she goes for.
This is another one of her more prominent looks that get seen a lot. She wears this look to the fair and another variation on this look for another standard day at school. She, like Jules, has so many good looks that I cannot feature all at once. Below is one last look that I loved from Maddy.
This is my all-time favorite look from this character. And the whole reason is the chain-link eyeliner. I have been researching since I saw this look on how I can replicate it. So far I have nothing, but trust me as soon as I do all of you will know.
Kat- She has the most complex character arch of anyone in the show. She goes from being kind of quiet and shy in the first episode to being bold and sexy and embracing herself. She embraces her sexuality and her body in a way that the other girls in this show seem to already have a grasp on. Her makeup is drastic and bold in a way that none of the other girls on the show are.
This look above is how she did her makeup for Halloween. She was some sort of gory nun from a movie I had never heard of, but she pulls it off well. The tiny details under her eyes are done perfectly as well as the blend on her lips with the black and red.
This is her most bold look. She wears this to a party accompanying a bomber/varsity jacket and a small half up-half down hairstyle. Barbie Ferreria wears fun makeup in her everyday life, which I’m sure made it even more fun for her to experiment with her character.
All of these characters have so many great looks that I can’t possibly chronicle all of them here. If you haven’t yet watched Euphoria I highly suggest you do! And pay special attention to all of their beautiful makeup. It is a truly amazing show for so many reasons that you just have to watch it to fully grasp it.
