Monterey, California
Just after Christmas last week, my dad, sister and I ventured over to the coast. It was a place we have been going for many years, at least once a year since I can remember. We finally made it back to Monterey for another go around at our favorite coastal town! Below are some of the best and our favorite places to go and see while in Monterey!
The Aquarium
Not only is the Monterey Bay Aquarium one of the biggest and has one of the largest collection of sea creatures, it is also the largest and most qualified teaching aquarium. There is a research program attached to the aquarium that helps students learn how to study marine life hands on, and then also studies the ocean itself. It also has many rescue programs in which it rescues and saves injured animals, or babies abandoned by their mothers, and rehabilitates them until they can go back out into the wild. The only animals in the aquarium are the one who were unable to be released back.
Cannery Row
This area of the city is where there is a lot of great restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and shopping. It is also the historic area of Monterey where they used to can all of the fish they had caught (mainly anchovies) before they were shipped out. Which is why it is rightfully named Cannery Row. While Monterey is still a big fishing hub, it focuses a lot more sustainable fishing and ocean conservation, rather than anchovies.
Fishermans Wharf
Fishermans Wharf is another place with more than enough fresh seafood to please you, as well as so many gorgeous views and old shops to meander. You can see the marina and board various different bay excursions, and do day fishing trips. The wharf is also the home of the best clam chowder yet to ever be tasted (at least according to us).
Slightly shorter post than normal, but things have been insane with the holidays and so much travel lately, but this was such a fun trip and its been awhile since I’ve posted a travel piece. Hope you all enjoyed this and had a great holiday season. Cheers to 2019!
